What will your congregation do to be part of the solution?
The 10% Challenge is for congregations interested in cutting their carbon footprint. Review the following list, and choose an activity that most closely aligns with what you would like to do by (or on) 10/10/10. The 10% Challenge will also accept a plan of action or an energy audit by 10/10/10 as well.Your congregation can:
Upgrade LightingExamples: Turn off lights, replace old light bulbs with CFLs, install motion sensors to lights turn off when room is empty, upgrade older flourescent tubes, install Energy Star exit signs.
Examine Heating and Cooling Systems
Examples: Tune up heating and cooling systems, seal air drafts around windows and ducts, install programmable thermostats, control direct sun depending on season, install fans, install weather stripping, install insulating blankets on hot water heater, replace old appliances with an Energy Star appliance, update heating and cooling systems, install systems that utilize renewable energy, buy renewable energy from your utility company, buy carbon offsets.
Plant Trees and Native Landscaping
Examples: plant native species which require less watering, divert grey water for plants, plant trees on grounds to absorb CO2 and provide shade.
Inspire Your Members about Climate Protection
Examples: Inspire your congregation to carpool by providing parking incentives, provide incentives or recognition for walking or biking to services, offer online streaming services with online tithing. Inspire members with specially prepared services about global warming. Inspirational greening can also cover policy and advocacy efforts related to global warming.
Submit a Plan of Action or Energy Audit by 10/10/10

Join a Work Party on 10/10/10
